Choose and save colors
Edit Hex, RGB, HSL or HSB values, organize named colors and use opacity where supported.
Choose how to edit a color#
Click a color swatch to open the shared picker. Swatch-and-Hex controls use a borderless appearance; keyboard focus stays visible. The value-mode selector has space below it, channel labels have an inset, and numeric fields use one focus outline. It is available in Light Layer Properties, color ramp stops, scene lights, materials, Object Layers, legacy Ambient, preview backgrounds, floor colors and effect tints.
Color contains the color square and value controls. Choose a mode below the square:
| Mode | Controls | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Hex | Hex code plus Hue, Saturation and Brightness sliders | Pasting an exact color |
| RGB | Red, Green and Blue, each from 0 to 255 | Matching RGB channel values |
| HSL | Hue in degrees; Saturation and Lightness in percent | Adjusting tint and lightness |
| HSB | Hue in degrees; Saturation and Brightness in percent | Adjusting a light or material intuitively |
HSB is also called HSV. Brightness and HSL Lightness are different measurements. HSB is the initial mode; your last chosen mode is remembered on this device. Switching modes keeps the same color. Enter a number in the boxed value field, drag a slider, or use arrow keys on a focused slider. Hex also accepts three-digit shorthand. Invalid or incomplete Hex input returns to the current color when you leave the field.
The square controls saturation and brightness. Its hue follows the selected color. These values describe the color itself: light intensity, exposure and display contrast remain their separate controls.
Save and organize colors#
Open My Palette, enter a name and click the yellow + to save the current color. A blank name becomes Color 1, Color 2, and so on. Click a saved color to apply it. Use the pencil to rename it or the trash button to remove it. Names support up to 48 characters; the palette holds up to 40 colors. Saving the same color under different names is allowed.
Presets contains named neutral and accent colors, followed by recent colors used in that picker session. Apply one, then return to Color to refine it. The footer has two touching, unlabeled swatches for comparison: the opening color on the left and your live choice on the right. Hover descriptions and accessible names identify them. Click the left swatch to restore the opening color. A screen eyedropper is available in browsers that support it.
The palette is saved on this device and shared between pickers and Studio windows on the same origin. Existing saved colors carry forward with generated names. These preferences are separate from project files. If device storage is unavailable, the picker reports that the palette is retained for the current session. Saving or naming a palette entry is independent of Cancel on the edited scene color.
Solid and transparent colors#
Most controls use solid color. Light colors, emissive colors, Object Layer display colors, ramp stops, backgrounds and effect tints do not expose opacity in this picker.
For a material with Transparency & rendering → Enable transparency selected, its base Color picker also shows Opacity, with a slider, number input and checkerboard preview. Hex accepts RRGGBBAA or four-digit RGBA shorthand in this context. Color and opacity are saved separately in the material, preserving project compatibility. Material transmission is a separate physical property.
Saved colors can retain opacity. Applying one to a solid-color control uses only its RGB color and leaves that control's other properties unchanged. Presets are opaque when applied to a transparent material.
Finish or cancel#
Done, Close, or clicking outside keeps the edit. Cancel or Escape restores the opening color and, where supported, opacity. Project color controls with history support group the open/edit/close session into one Undo step. Preview-only settings retain their existing history behavior.
The popup keeps the height established by Color when you switch to My Palette or Presets. Long palettes and preset lists scroll inside that space, so adding colors does not make the popup taller. In short windows, the popup fits the viewport; at very small heights or enlarged interface sizes, the whole popup scrolls to keep tabs, controls and footer reachable.
See Light Layer Properties, materials and scene lights, and Object Layers.
My Palette aligns saved swatches with the Saved colors heading and new-color row. Color and transparency checks share one rounded surface, including the joined comparison preview, so opaque swatches have clean corners.
